Juicy~Sexy Peri/Menopause: Recipe Inside!

It’s so exciting to be living in a time when we get to rewrite the rules of what it means to be a woman in the Peri/Menopausal years.

I wholeheartedly believe that the stereotype of the dried-up peri/menopausal woman is a misogynistic myth that’s so over and done. Isn’t it laughable to think that you reached your peak some 10, 15 or even 20 years ago? I for one, believe that my most amazing years are ahead of me, and right here at this incredible moment in time.

The truth is, there’s no consensus on why, or even if a woman’s sexuality wanes at menopause, accompanying her falling hormones. This topic has long intrigued me because I’ve always intuited that the common wisdom was wrong, and neglected to factor in the complexity of a woman’s being, especially in relationship to her body, emotional landscape and sexuality.

As women, sexuality is so much more than a physiological phenomenon. Our sexuality lives in the realm of the emotional, psychological, spiritual and sacred. That’s why our culture’s attempt to medicalize a woman’s sexuality has never worked. Definitely easier when it comes to male sexuality, as evidenced by the popularity of the drug Viagra. But there’s a reason that there’s no correlate for women.

Decreasing hormones. Hot flashes. Dry vagina. Feeling old and unattractive. Does all of this add up to a death of your sexuality? Or does your sexuality just go underground for other reasons? What do you think?

Over years of listening to women’s stories, I’ve come to believe that the biggest influence on a woman’s sexuality is relational. Meaning, not only the relationship with your significant other, but even more importantly, the relationship with your own body. Because if you’ve spent most of your life care-taking other’s needs, and neglecting to nurture this most vital aspect of your self, you may well feel unsure if it still exists.

When I was still in my 30s and practicing gynecology in NYC, a question on the intake-form was around sexual activity. And, I was always interested to hear from my patients in their menopausal years. The truth is, most of these stories weren’t hopeful. So many peri/menopausal women reported being in sexless marriages, or happily single but feeling, “dead down there.” 

However, there were the intriguing exceptions! I was always captivated by women in their later years who reported sexual satisfaction. I remember one such gorgeous lady, close to 70, with long silver hair, straight spine and aquiline nose. When I asked about sexual activity, she said, “yup, I never lost that.” And then she flashed a mischievous smile.

I remember another glowing woman in her 60’s, who’d recently fell in love for the first time in her life. She actually became so juicy and hormonal, that she got a period! That’s the power of love, and the hormonal/emotional connection I’m always referring to.

Of course, biologically speaking, sexuality is about procreation. And there’s a long-standing cultural view belief that once our bodies no longer have this potential –to bare young– that your sexuality quietly withers. But is this true?

After working in reproductive women’s health for over 20 years, I still had questions about all of this myself. But then, something really interesting happened for me. Quite unexpectedly, my long-term marriage came to a screeching halt at age 53 — when I was already post-menopausal. And the most amazing thing happened — my libido shot through the roof! Here’s what I’ve learned through this journey, and have now come to believe about sexuality in peri/menopause.

That even more than procreation, even more than the aspect of pleasure that sex brings…the most vital aspect of sexuality is about the need for connection. It’s about the most basic human need for connection and intimacy: to be revealed, seen and loved.

As humans, we are wired for connection, love and pleasure. And this part of ourselves never grows old. It’s always present, even if we dis-acknowledge it. Even if we feel too unattractive for it. Even when our partner feels too far away for it. It is always there. Waiting…

Until the day we die, we have the need for connection with other humans, deep connection, intimate connection. As women, this is the most fundamental aspect of sexuality in our menopausal years. The deep sense of connection, pleasure and joy, shared with another human being, that our hearts and bodies yearn for.

So, if you’ve been questioning if you’re just too old for sex, or feeling that you’re sexuality’s dead…think again. Spend some time with your body and ask her what she longs for. Maybe she needs self-love and self-pleasuring. Maybe she needs the touch of another. Deep listening will bring you to places that may be long buried.

And here’s my view on vulvo/vaginal dryness in the menopausal years. Vaginal dryness generally feeds into the idea of the menopausal woman as “dried up” and crusty. But I like to think of my vagina in this phase of life as reverting back to that of myself as a young girl, before my vagina was primed with estrogen. Your vulva/vagina is just as perfect now, as it was then. Just as sweet.

Here are some fabulous recipes for keeping yourself feeling sexy and juicy in your peri/menopausal years:

1) Moisturize your vulva/vagina every day. That’s right ladies – it’s not just the face and neck that needs moisturizing in this phase of life. I love to make my own moisturizer with organic oils and cocoa butter. Just smoothing it on feels so damn lovely! Or, you can purchase these natural products below, so pure, you could eat them. They also make great sexual lubricants.

Peri/Menopause: the Best Kept Secret!

Needing a PARASITE CLEANSE??

Dearest Beauty;

I hope your summer is flowing beautifully, filled with relaxation, joy and spiritual growth. Mine has been chock-full, mostly of the the spiritual growth kind–which is always that magical blend of bliss and upheaval!

I just got back from a pilgrimage to Glastonbury, England, where I traveled to sacred sites, and deep into my heart and soul…and honestly, haven’t quite landed yet .

Here’s a few photos, for a little taste, even if they don’t quite capture the true adventure:

A large piece of my physical healing this year has been around gut healing, and the most profound impact I’ve had to this end has been in the realm of a Parasite Cleanse. I’ve come to believe that the bulk of gut issues have to do with parasites that may have been with you for a lifetime. So gross, I know!

If you have bloating, constipation or loose, frequent stools, discomfort or gas on a near daily basis….you’re very likely in need of a parasite cleanse. 

One of the trickiest parts of healing your gut health has to do with the fact that whatever you’re accustomed to feels normal. And if you have a bit of improvement in this area, you figure you’re probably good. But are you? I encourage you to get honest about your digestive and elimination issues.

Healthy digestion means that you barely notice this function at all, and are energized by both eating and elimination. Healthy elimination means that your colon clears out completely on a daily basis, without pain, discomfort, watery stools or profuse gas and bloating. Is this you? If not, here are some things to consider…

Other symptoms associated with intestinal parasites, that may be impacting your health include:

Fatigue, headaches, skin issues, anxiety, sleep issues, autoimmunity, joint pain, urinary symptoms…a pretty comprehensive list. But I think that take-home is that if you’re having digestive issues, accompanied by any of these symptoms, they may be greatly alleviated by getting rid of those nasty parasites.

The other tricky thing about working with parasite elimination is thatconventional medicine barely acknowledges this issue at all, and medical testing is notoriously inaccurate. So if you have a suspicion that all is not right, you’re probably correct.

Gut health, and specifically a parasite cleanse needs to be undertaken as a project, where you commit to a period of time of clean eating. This entails cutting out sugar and other refined carbohydrates, while also taking herbs and other supplements to kill off the offending creatures. My general recommendation is a commitment of a minimum of 3 months.

I love the products from a company called CellCore, for yeast & parasite cleansing, and detoxifying the system from the die-off that occurs, leading to brain-fog and bloating. They are effective, with great tolerability and few side effects.

Later on in your gut healing process, there are plenty of wonderful products for repair of the gut wall, and replenishment of healthy bacteria.  But you can start now by including fermented vegetables into your diet, on a daily basis.

Favorite Remedies for GUT HEALING

Gut Healing has been something of a life-long project for me, having suffered from belly issues since I was very, very young.

The reason that healing your gut is SO challenging is because it’s been with you so long and therefore so entrenched, and because it requires changes that aren’t easy to make. Namely, your DIET. Your SUGAR ADDICTION. Your every day habits.

That’s why it’s not for the faint of heart, or those looking for a quick fix. It takes a great deal of commitment and determination. However, it’s worth the effort because Gut Health is truly the key to sparkling health! 

If you have bloating, constipation or loose, frequent stools, discomfort or gas on a near daily basis….you’re in need of gut healing. Here are the most important tools that I’ve learned on my way back to sparkling gut health.

The key to living well in this world as an Evolved/Empathic/Ultra-Sensitive woman is SELF-AWARENESS and knowing how to care for your unique needs.

Truly understanding these needs and how you’re unique is something that you never learned about in school, and mainstream culture doesn’t validate. Often, your family and friends don’t really get it either. So in order to live your best life, this information may be really helpful. Which leads to the first survival tip…

1) KNOW YOUR SELF: Most of my clients generally fall into one of these categories, or are a mix of the three, even though they have no identification with these labels. But labels can be really enlightening to understand yourself and your needs. So the first survival tip is simply to claim your status as an evolved, empathic, or highly-sensitive woman. Even though you may well choose to keep it to yourself.

2) UNDERSTAND YOUR NERVOUS SYSTEM: Your nervous system is more sensitive than most, and you can become overwhelmed more easily. You pick up energies and subtleties that most aren’t aware of. Think of your nervous system as an advanced but delicate instrument. Because of this, you need adequate sleep, rest and soothing tonics such as flower essences, nervine herbs and other tools for rejuvenation. This doesn’t mean that you’re not strong, but you need to know what best supports you.

3) HEALTHCARE AND YOU: For evolved, empathic and highly-sensitive women, your health needs are not the same as the average woman. Mainstream medicine often doesn’t understand your issues, and isn’t helpful for you. The treatments may be too harsh, and methods too crude. Or maybe you have symptoms that no doctor knows how to interpret, and so your discomfort is minimized or disregarded. Perhaps nothing comes up on tests, but you still know that something’s not right. Due to your level of sensitivity, you may be aware of an issue before it can be detected on tests. Here’s the thing: conventional health care views the body as a machine, but you tend to hold emotions in your body, which doesn’t translate in the world of medicine. Further, for the evolved/empathic/highly-sensitive woman, your challenges come to help you grow and transform, including your health challenges. In other words, your health issues are part of your spiritual path.

4) YOUR ENVIRONMENT: Because of your delicate nervous system, you’re very sensitive to the environment that you find yourself in. This involves home, work, restaurants and other social spots. Common things like fluorescent lighting and cleaning products with intense odors may be totally disarming for you. There’s nothing wrong with you! Rather, we’re living in a really toxic world, and you’re like the canary in the coal mine whose body is picking that problems before the rest of the collective. Make sure that your home is a sanctuary and a place where you can adequately rest. Do your best to avoid toxicity in your workplace. This may necessitate changing jobs or even careers.

5) YOUR RELATIONSHIPS: This category is undoubtedly the trickiest of all. It involves deep examination and courage to see unhealthy or even toxic patterns with those you love. But let me be blunt: empathic/highly-sensitive women tend to give too much, love too much, work too hard for others, you get the picture. We have so much to give, and haven’t necessarily learned who is truly deserving of our gifts. Evolved souls have access to a great deal of love, capability and are deeply loyal. However, if you were devalued in your family of origin, it’s not uncommon to attract others that take advantage in one way or another. Your life lessons may involve creating healthy boundaries to those unworthy of your love.

ATTRACTING TOXIC RELATIONSHIPS?? It’s Not Your Fault!!!

As an empath and highly sensitive person, I’ve spent a lifetime learning about this topic. And I’ve spent a good, many years teaching other women how to erect healthy boundaries and avoid toxic relationships in their own lives.

You would be shocked to learn how linked this issue is with chronic illness. I’ve helped women heal everything from severe cervical dysplasia to chronic pain to hormonal imbalance and infertility, by (among other things) weeding toxic relationships out of their lives.

For myself, after breaking off so many friendships in my thirties and forties, and then leaving my marriage because of covert narcissism, I felt myself an expert on the subject, having studied everything there is to know.

But just when I thought I’d turned over every stone, and was immune to selfish, using, insensitive people who never take responsibility for their actions, all while claiming victim status, I’ve once again found myself in the orbit of such a woman. A woman who I’ve called my friend.

It started out great. She was smart and charming. We loved to sing together. We talked about divorce and children, health, sex and dating. She was the type of friend I could really have fun with.

But mostly, there was something that instantly “clicked” with her. She felt familiar. A deep comfort. Like home. And THIS is where I’ve learned to become wary.

You see, these types of feelings indicate your “Love Code.” Where it feels most comfortable to “attach” to another. It’s how you were imprinted for love, from the earliest age, with your very first relationship to your primary caregiver. It’s what feels like intimacy.

Many of us empaths and ultra-sensitives, have been encoded to draw in those that are needy and selfish, due to our “love code.” If you have this tendency, please know that it’s not your fault. It’s simply what got imprinted, during a time of life where there were no options or awareness of anything other.

But now, you DO have awareness. Actually, I’m sure that you’re a very evolved and conscious person who knows that change and growth are natural and inevitable. You have grit and fortitude. And that’s why I know that this issue can change too. With the proper understanding, support and tools, this too will shift. We can find loving, supportive and giving people to share our lives with. Currently, mine is almost full with them.

The SECRET to PERI-MENOPAUSAL THRIVING

The secret to thriving in Peri-menopause isn’t a hormone cream, an herbal formula, or a cure-all supplement. It isn’t more yoga or self-care or even more sex. All of these things are wonderful, and definitely helpful, but not the secret to true thriving.

Actually, Peri-menopause isn’t even really a “thing.”

You see, there are women who never get symptoms at all, and just slip into the time of their life when they stop getting periods, without skipping a beat. There are entire cultures where these symptoms don’t even exist. So what makes them different from YOU???

Here’s a clue: hormonal health is deeply connected with your emotional health on a physiological level. And emotional health doesn’t mean “happiness” per se. What it does mean, is being present with your truth, moment by moment, and being able to flow with the expression of your emotions. But the question is: Does your life support your truth, flow and expression?

Here’s another clue from the brilliant tome, The Wisdom of Menopause by Christiane Northrup, M.D.

“Our hormones are giving us an opportunity to see, once and for all, what we need to change in order to live honestly, fully, joyfully, and healthfully in the second half of our lives. This is the time when many women stop doing what I call “stuffing” –stifling their own needs in order to tend to everybody else’s…
If, however, a woman cannot face the changes she needs to make in her life, her body may find a way to point them out to her, lit up in neon and impossible to ignore.”

This is exactly what I have observed, over 30 years of working with women in this phase of life. Peri-menopause is SUCH a powerful time to take stock of your life, and make the changes that need to be made. Otherwise, you’re in for a bumpy ride. Again, quoting Dr. Northrup,

“...we attract precisely the illness or problem that best facilitates our access to our inner wisdom — a phenomenon that is both awe-inspiring and sometimes terrifying.”

This is what I’ve seen as well. Both in my own life, and in the lives of my clients. But it doesn’t have to get to the point of crisis! Which is why I feel compelled to share the real SECRET of thriving in Peri-menopause.

And here it is…

The secret to thriving in Peri-menopause is…(drumroll please)

ALIGNMENT

That’s right…Alignment.

As in:

Alignment with your Soul
Alignment with your True Self
Alignment with your sacred purpose
Alignment with why you’re HERE, at this moment in time.

The women that I see thriving in Peri-menopause are the women who are in ALIGNMENT.
